Today made us think what it’s like to be in the Chinook. The doctors in the back of the Chinook working in half-light to administer life-saving treatment to the casualties as the aircraft bucks and weaves its way back to Bastion. We have high regard for our doctors, medics and nurses and the amazing things they do to save soldiers. There was an annoying article in the press recently that there are not enough helicopters in Afghanistan, and that the time it takes to extract casualties from the battlefield is far too long – sometimes hours. Yes, more helicopters would be great, but the real truth is that the British military make every effort to pick up and extract casualties. The aircrew are on immediate standby, similar to Spitfire pilots awaiting the call to scramble in the Second World War, and when launched are far faster than that. The crews have a no-holds-barred, will-go-anywhere attitude, even under heavy fire, to extract wounded. There is nothing higher up the list of priorities. And the medics on the aircraft and the Chinook crews are among the bravest men and women I have ever had the privilege to meet.
